Double Opt-In: The Crucial List Ingredient

While many ingredients go into creating an effective e-mail campaign, there’s one ingredient that’s absolutely crucial if you want to avoid misery and failure.

That critical ingredient is a double opt-in list.

What makes an email list “double opt-in” is that any person who subscribes must confirm their permission twice.

The first permission is when the user submits his or her email address on a  web based form, whether it’s signing up for an online course, or buying something at an online store, or completing an online survey – anything that captures the user's information and permission.

After the initial permission is received by the email list software, a confirmation email is sent to the address the person entered into the form. This outbound email contains a link which the recipient must click to confirm his or her subscription request. This is the second opt-in, and once the user clicks the link, he or she has double opted-in.

What Makes Double Opt-In So Important

Double opt-in is crucial to effective, legal e-mail marketing today. The double opt-in confirms that the person who entered his or her email address actually wants to subscribe to the list. Without the second confirmation (single opt-in), any person can enter any email address to subscribe anyone else to anything. (Read the hair-raising example a little further on.)

The Danger of Single Opt-In

A single opt-in means that you've put a form on your website where a visitor can enter his email address, hit submit, and start receiving your emails. That's all it takes.

This is not guaranteed permission. Anyone can enter an email address, and without double opt-in, there's no way to know if it's really his. Without the verification, you could start sending your emails to somebody who does not know you or want to be contacted by you. And this can be very damaging – can even expose you to a costly spam complaint under the federal CAN-SPAM Act.

Imagine if you upset someone and he decided to get revenge on you by entering your email address into hundreds of pornographic email newsletters. You would be forced to abandon that email account (unless you really like porn) if these lists were single opt-in.

From the email list owner’s perspective it’s important that only people who genuinely want to be on your list are signed up. If you use a single-opt in method and, like the porn newsletter example, someone entered hundreds of email addresses of people who did not want to subscribe to your list, it could sabotage your entire email effort. You would call it a failure because it was never properly launched – or maintained.

The whole point of a double opt-in email list is to attract people who subscribe demonstrating that they are prospects for what you offer - their request for information signifies this. Using a double opt-in list is essential for keeping the quality of your email list high.

Consider that your email list has 20,000 members but they are all single opt-in and very likely many of the addresses on the list are not valid or go to people who never requested to be on your list. You deploy your email campaign but get dismal results and decide it's not worth the time, effort or money. You abandon your email marketing.

Why Cheap is Expensive in the World of Email

Anybody selling bulk email lists dirt cheap (a nickel, 3 cents, even less) and offering to send them out — especially multiple times – is immediately suspect for selling spam lists, that is: lists that are “scraped” by using web crawlers and email crawlers, or not truly verified for permission to send offers.

The default judgment of cheap lists is that there is no real double opt-in permission to use these names. If a name is not double opt-in, it’s dangerous and unreliable.

The CAN-SPAM act makes it a federal crime to spam. That’s all you need to know about that. Federal. Crime. (Very expensive.) And the law is enforced.

More than that, a spam list is not effective. So if you think that you’ll just roll the dice and use it once, you should know that you’re sending your offer to people who are not likely to be interested, and who may actually get angry and report you because you spammed them. You’re only inviting heat. From your community. From the law.

Third: Your list is not targeted in any way.
